Edible Fez_Sara Dowle

An immediate response to Place Lalla Yeddouna is its dynamic character and the constant flow of activity. Although the craftspeople give the square an element of identity and the stream of people is buzzing and incessant, the space can currently only be considered as a thoroughfare.

The reaction to this is to create a new destination square in Fez that provides a unique personality. It will be a place with function, a place for people to meet, a place to work, a place of intrigue and innovation.

The main concept behind the new square stems from Fez’s recognition of being the culinary capital of Morocco. With cities around the world instigating urban agriculture schemes as new ways in which to grow crops and keep livestock within their walls, Place Lalla Yeddouna provides a key location along the river to bring in this concept.

The brief therefore was to create an urban space with a new edible identity and a building, a culinary school that can provide education and employment for men and women between the ages of 16 and 24.
